5 Designing Lessons You Should Learn from Milton Glaser

Milton Glaser is arguably the most famous graphic designer alive today. He’s the guy who designed the “I heart NY” logo which has become an iconic symbol for us all. Here are five designing lessons we should learn from this man:

  • “Solving any problem is more important than being right.”
  • “Certainty is a closing of the mind. To create something new you must have doubt.”
  • “Fail more often in order to find out what you’re capable of learning.”
  • “To design is to communicate clearly by whatever means you can control or master.”
  • “There are three responses to a piece of design—yes, no, and WOW! Wow is the one to aim for.”

Put these lessons to good use. We live in a time when persistence is necessary.

Broaden Perspectives to Create Meaningful Experiences for All, Not Some

Here at 2Plus2 we are constantly looking for new things to learn, insights and perspectives to shift away from what we've always known. We believe this is how great design happens. To rise to the level of Universal Design, we must identify and overcome our unconscious biases and free ourselves from limited perspective. By doing this we remain open to more ideas and possibilities than we could ever imagine.

"Personal biases color the way we make decisions, form beliefs, and engage with those around us. While it can be easy to label bias as a “bad” thing, all it really means is that we have a partial perspective of the world. Our biases only become problems when we’re unconscious and unaware of them — and when we base our beliefs entirely on the assumptions and perspectives we think are true."

Broadening perspectives to bring awareness to unconscious bias is a major tool for creating more meaningful user experiences and by practicing it we can bring a new level of fulfillment to your design and your life.
